The Basic Health Unit (BHU) project was established to improve access to quality primary healthcare for underserved rural communities in Bagh District, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The region is home to predominantly rural, agricultural communities where access to essential healthcare has long been limited.

Following the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, much of the area’s health infrastructure was destroyed, leaving thousands without reliable medical services. The disaster significantly disrupted healthcare delivery and highlighted the urgent need to rebuild and strengthen local health facilities.

In response, the project focused on constructing a modern Basic Health Unit that would bring essential healthcare services closer to the community. The BHU was designed to provide comprehensive primary medical care through a doctors’ office, general ward, pharmacy, blood lab, and vaccination services, while also including a maternity ward and delivery room to support maternal and newborn health. In addition to these facilities, the BHU promotes health education, disease prevention, and improved public awareness to help create healthier communities.

Construction of the facility began in July 2012 and, despite delays caused by seasonal weather and other challenges, was successfully completed within one and a half years. Today, the BHU serves as an important healthcare resource, improving access to quality medical services for surrounding villages.

Looking ahead, plans include expanding the facility by adding residential accommodations for doctors and healthcare staff. This will help ensure continuous medical care, strengthen emergency response, and support the long-term sustainability of healthcare services for the communities the BHU serves.
